Introduction
A Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) is a network device that manages and controls wireless access points (APs) in a wireless network. It provides a centralized interface for configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting multiple APs, enhancing network performance, security, and manageability.
Key Functions of WLCs
- Centralized management of AP configurations and firmware updates.
- Load balancing and seamless roaming for wireless clients.
- Enhanced security and policy enforcement.
- Monitoring and troubleshooting of the wireless network.
- Automatic RF (radio frequency) management to optimize coverage and performance.
Access Points are hardware devices or nodes in a WLAN that allow wireless devices (like laptops, smartphones, and tablets) to connect to a wired network. They act as a bridge between wireless clients and the wired network infrastructure.
Key Functions of Access Points
- Transmit and receive wireless signals.
- Authenticate and connect wireless clients.
- Forward data between wireless devices and the wired network.
- Support security features like encryption and user authentication.
Key Use cases
Discovery Use cases
The device discovery enables the customer with an unified way of showing all of the AP’s under the WLC.
- It discovers the Wireless LAN Controller following is the resource structure.
- Wireless LAN Controller
- Wireless LAN Controller Access Point
- Wireless LAN Controller
- Publishes relationships between resources to have a topological view and ease of maintenance.
Monitoring Use cases
The device monitoring helps to collect the metric values with respect to time and sends alert to the intended customer team to act up on immediately in case of any threshold breach or unexpected metric behaviour observed based on configurations. In a way it helps the customer with smooth functioning of business with minimal or zero downtime in case of any infrastructure related issues occurring.
- Provides metrics related to job scheduling time and status and so on.
- Concern alerts will be generated for each metric to notify the administrator regarding the issue with the resource
Integration Approach
OpsRamp integrates with WLC using SNMP.
